September 9th, Thursday night Muslims in Los Angeles, CA will have 37 minutes after Maghrib to sight the moon before it sets below the horizon. Muslims in Miami, FL will have 43 minutes after Maghrib to sight it before it sets. This data is about celestial body positioning, which is an exact science

We start our fast and end our fast based on the sighting of the hilaal (crescent moon) because the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Fast when you see it, and stop fasting when you see it" (Muslim). Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said: "Do not fast until you sight the crescent and do not break (end) the fast until you sight it. (Bukhārī) Since this is a command on a matter of Ibaada (Worship), any other means to determine the start of the fast or end of the fast is considered a Bid'ah.
